As últimas 3 edições da revista Philosophy Now brindaram os seus leitores com uma pequena autobiografia de Daniel C. Dennett dividida em 3 partes.

No último número, acabadinho de chegar, Dennet debruça-se sobre a sua actividade recente em prol do ateísmo. Explica quais os caminhos que o levaram a interessar mais por esta matéria e expõe as suas motivações e preocupações.

Embora recomende a leitura das 3 partes desta pequena autobiografia, quero aqui salientar os pontos que considerei mais relevantes do seu texto sobre a sua vida enquanto bright e ateu.

O primeiro aspecto é a reflexão sobre o perigo de transformar uma opinião não científica numa opinião anti-científica:

“It is possible, of course, to contribute to our understanding of these beloved phenomena without paying any heed to the questions scientists raise about them; but when an unscientific perspective drifts into an anti-scientific perspective (as it frequently does), the result tends to be either obscurantism or mythmaking.”

Sobre o próprio termo em si, Dennett considera que a palavra “ateísmo” irá no futuro desaparecer, da mesma forma que agora não temos nenhum termo para definir as pessoas que acreditam que a Terra é redonda:

“I had no interest in canvassing arguments for the non-existence of God, or writing about the prospects for atheism – a term which will, I’m sure, eventually become as unnecessary as ‘round-earthism’.”

Sobre o hate-mail que vai recebendo devido às suas posições enquanto membro da mais recente vaga de ateístas famosos, Dennettt é claro quanto à impossibilidade da fé estar isenta de crítica racional:

“It is true that I went out of my way to avoid gratuitous insult; but the fact is that people have no right to protection of their fragile sensibilities regarding their faith. Religious allegiance has ramifications too important to be out of bounds to rational inquiry.”

Finalmente, quero destacar a sugestão deixada por Dennett de que todas as crianças (nos EUA) deveriam ter uma educação sobre as diversas religiões do mundo e sobre a ausência de religião como forma de prevenir a doutrinação inconsequente baseada na autoridade:

“There is still the large and important project of steering the new openness about religion in effective directions, and I am devoting further time to my project of establishing a system of compulsory education about the world’s religions for all children in the United States, on the grounds that the toxic forms of religious fanaticism all depend on the enforced ignorance of the young. Oblige their elders to inform them about the varieties of religion, and lack of religion, in the world, and they will find it much more difficult to indoctrinate the children under their authority.”
